Our Hand Therapy Specialties

After getting a prescription from your doctor, we develop a customized hand therapy plan to meet your needs. From building strength and flexibility to protecting delicate areas, we deliver comprehensive care that brings lasting hand pain relief.

Specialized hand rehabilitation services that draw patients from across the Capital Region include:

  • Custom orthoses or splints: An orthotic or splint is a wearable device that holds your hand, arm or fingers in a specific position to aid healing. Custom orthoses fit the unique shape of your body, protecting certain areas or enabling them to move a particular way. Your doctor provides a prescription with detailed instructions for customizing the orthosis.
  • Severe injury and surgery rehabilitation: We get your recovery off to a great start with services that include wound management and gentle therapies. If you feel self-conscious about your hand’s appearance, you receive care in a private therapy room.

Other Hand Therapy Services

Some of the additional hand therapy services we offer include:

Joint protection

We teach you self-care activities and new methods for completing daily tasks that are gentler on your joints. Therapists may recommend resting before becoming tired or using your nondominant hand, where joints are less sensitive. You may benefit from this service if you have arthritis, which causes inflammation and wear and tear on the joint.

Manual therapy

Therapists use hands-on techniques to relieve joint and muscle issues. We may apply gentle pressure to assess symptoms, which helps us determine how serious a condition is. Manual therapy also includes treating the condition with a gentle touch. We use a variety of methods to increase flexibility and movement.

Nerve and tendon gliding exercises

When you move your hands and wrists, the nerves and tendons glide along a thin layer of tissue, enabling smooth motion. Scar tissue from surgery and injuries can prevent these fibers from gliding, making it difficult to bend the affected area. We lead you through exercises that make it possible for the nerves and tendons to glide again.

Sensory education and desensitization

Severe injuries and conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome can cause you to lose sensation in your hand. Or nerves may overreact, making even the slightest touch painful. We guide you through sensory education to bring back feeling in your hand. Desensitization restores your tolerance for gentle touch and increasingly stronger sensations.

Scar and wound management

After surgery or emergency treatments, we provide follow-up care. Therapists remove bandages, wraps and surgical dressings and make sure wounds are healing well. We fit you with new dressings, braces or orthoses that meet your needs. As you recover, we help you safely resume activities and take extra steps to prevent scars from limiting movement.

Therapeutic ultrasound

This treatment uses high-frequency sound waves to promote healing. We deliver therapeutic ultrasound using a small device and slowly pass it over the affected area. The sound waves create heat deep beneath the skin’s surface to improve blood circulation. This therapy also improves flexibility to treat stubborn hand pain and stiffness.
