Outpatient Neurorehab at Sunnyview: Why Choose Us?

You can count on us for an exceptional level of care. Our experienced team of doctors and therapists uses the latest evidence-based methods. We work together to tailor therapies to your medical needs and recovery goals. This commitment to excellence has earned our program recognition by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF®).

Highlights of our program include:

  • Team approach: Physical medicine doctors (physiatrists) specializing in neurological conditions guide your care. Neuropsychologists perform detailed evaluations of your cognitive abilities, which include thinking and memory. They work closely with therapists and other team members, so you receive timely services. Meet our physical rehabilitation team.
  • Support: Our nurse case managers continually assess your needs to make sure you are receiving appropriate therapies. We also coordinate with your insurance and help you access community resources, like transportation services, so that you can focus on healing.
  • Family-centered approach: Families are welcome to participate in discussions about their loved ones’ care, even if they can’t attend in person. We host family conferences to explain rehabilitation plans and discuss progress. The team also shares tips for keeping your loved one safe at home and steps you can take to support their recovery.

Who Is Eligible for Outpatient Neurorehabilitation?

You may be eligible to participate in outpatient neurological services if you:

  • Have a prescription from a New York state licensed physician
  • Are medically stable, meaning you no longer require intensive medical care
  • Have the physical endurance to manage up to three hours of therapy per day
  • Are not at risk for aggressive behaviors toward yourself or others
  • Can manage your own toileting needs or have a loved one on hand to assist you
  • Are alcohol and substance-free
  • Have transportation available to and from each session

Assistive Technologies and Devices

If you need help relearning how to walk or use your arms, access to assistive technologies can help. We offer a range of options, some of which are not widely available, including:

  • Wearable devices: We use the ReWalk™ and Ekso™ Exoskeleton to help you get back on your feet. When these devices sense movement, tiny motors engage to help them move your legs.
  • Special harness and treadmill: The Litegait® system is a sturdy harness over a treadmill. The harness supports your weight and ensures good posture. Therapists guide your legs as you walk at a safe, comfortable pace.
  • Robot-assisted therapy: The BURT robotic device helps you regain use of your arms. The device combines gaming and robotic technologies to encourage movement. Over time, your movements become stronger and more controlled with practice.
