Life is too busy to let hip pain slow you down.

And at St. Peter’s Health Partners, you don’t have to. Our orthopedic experts and knowledgeable hospital-based team maintain high care standards, helping more patients achieve excellent results. Many patients go home the same day and get back to their usual activities within a few weeks.

What Is Total Hip Replacement Surgery?

Even when you’re sitting still, your hips are hard at work, keeping your body stable. If arthritis or a bad fall damages this joint, you may be in constant pain. Once-simple movements, such as walking or lying down, may become too much to bear. Replacing your hip with an artificial device restores smooth motion that enables you to get back to the life you love.

Hip Replacement Surgery: What to Expect

If you live with stubborn hip pain, seeing our orthopedic experts is the first step toward achieving much-needed relief. Here’s what to expect:

Evaluation

We listen carefully as you describe how hip pain affects your daily life. We review your X-rays, explain the risks and benefits of total hip replacement surgery and describe what recovery looks like. Then, we work with you to determine whether now is the right time to move forward with surgery.

Nonsurgical therapies

Some patients may delay or avoid a joint replacement using nonsurgical techniques. Recommendations may include lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding activities like squatting that strain the hip. You may also benefit from pain medications or injections to reduce inflammation.

Pre-surgical planning

We use digital imaging technology to create a 3D template of your hip. This template ensures you receive a replacement joint that’s the appropriate size. We also use the template to customize hip devices in people with misshapen bones.

Joint replacement surgery

Surgeons remove the damaged joint and spongy tissue (cartilage) supporting it. We replace it using the latest artificial devices made of metal and durable plastic. Instead of attaching it with cement or hardware, the artificial joint grows into your bone for a natural, lasting fit.

Recovery

If you are eligible for the enhanced recovery program, you get out of bed shortly after surgery. After your first physical therapy session and careful monitoring from our nursing team, you go home. Patients who are not eligible for enhanced recovery receive the same attention but go home the next day.

After you get home

A nurse calls you to help your recovery stay on track. We ask about your pain and activity levels and offer suggestions, if necessary. You continue to receive personalized care through follow-up appointments. Some patients need assistance from our physical and occupational therapists to ease back into daily activities.
