Since 1988, St. Peter's Hospital ALS Regional Center has been providing people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, and their families with a comprehensive, specialized blend of services and resources.

ALS Services

Most services and resources are provided by St. Peter's ALS Regional Center at no charge to the patient and family. These include:

  • Individualized assessment and treatment programming on both an inpatient and outpatient basis
  • Assistance in coordination of care in the patient's and their family's community
  • Individual and family counseling
  • Home visits by nurses and various team members
  • Volunteer support
  • Consultation to people in a 90-mile radius in upstate New York served by the Center
  • Educational/Support group for people with ALS, their families and caregivers. The meetings cover topics, such as:
    • physical and occupational therapy
    • speech, swallowing and nutritional management
    • nutrition consultations
    • alternative communication devices
    • life support choices
  • Monthly caregiver's support group
  • Medical and communication equipment available on loan through the Center
  • Lending library offering articles, books and videos
  • Bereavement follow up
  • ALS education/consultation for health care professionals and agencies
  • Advocacy/awareness
  • ALS Research
  • Family Coping
  • Therapy - General Information

PLEASE NOTE: 
Physician and rehabilitation services are chargeable services. Most insurance plans cover these charges; but it is important for you to check with your individual insurance company to ensure coverage before services are provided. No charge is applied for nursing case management, social work, or nutrition consults. 

A complete range of specialists provide a multidisciplinary approach to patient visits at our convenient, handicapped-accessible center in Albany. The Center provides both medical and emotional support to help maintain quality of life throughout the course of this disease; serving as a model of compassion and care for similar programs nationally.

ALS Center Staff

The ALS Center is staffed with an interdisciplinary team comprised of medical professionals from both St. Peter's Hospital and St. Peter's Rehabilitation Center. The team includes:

  • ALS physician
  • Specialized ALS nurses
  • Respiratory therapist
  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Speech pathologist
  • Social worker 
  • Registered dietician 

Free Assistive Equipment

We loan/lease assistive equipment free of charge for use by persons with ALS. Pick up and delivery should be arranged with the ALS Center by the borrower. Volunteer assistance may sometimes be available.
