When it comes to childbirth, expectant mothers have many different preferences. If you want a medical doctor to deliver your baby, our obstetrics program may be a good choice for you.

Our obstetricians are highly trained over many years to detect problems, control pain during labor and manage issues with a variety of medical interventions. They deliver newborns vaginally, by cesarean section (C-section) or by trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC).

Obstetrics: Why Choose St. Peter’s Health Partners?

Expectant mothers who choose our obstetrics program find:

  • A team of certified, experienced doctors: Our obstetricians are board-certified specialists who deliver thousands of babies a year.
  • Nurse experts always available: All of our eligible nurses are nationally certified in fetal monitoring. A nurse accompanies every physician during each visit and is available to answer questions on the phone during and after business hours. Our team also includes physician assistants and nurse practitioners so that someone is always available for appointments.
  • Convenient, complete services: Many of our pregnancy care services are conveniently available within the same building, including bloodwork, glucose testing and ultrasound. Patients can easily make various appointments for the same day.
  • The region’s only level III NICU: St. Peter’s Hospital has the only level III NICU in the Capital Region. When a baby is premature or ill, our obstetricians connect directly with specialists in the NICU. They work 24/7 to help your newborn thrive.
  • Nationally recognized excellence: St. Peter’s Hospital won the Women’s Choice Award for America’s Best Hospitals every year from 2015 to 2019. It also received Magnet Recognition for excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Joint Commission has recognized St. Peter’s Hospital for having a low, safe rate of elective induced deliveries.

Nursing Excellence in Pregnancy Care

St. Peter’s Health Partners was the first in the region to require nurses to obtain national certification in fetal monitoring.

In the delivery room, you have a dedicated nurse, and your baby has one, too. After recovery, you and your baby receive “couplet care.” One nurse tends to you and your baby, taking time to get to know your family and minimizing interruptions in your room.

Our nurses don’t wait until the last minute to prepare you and your baby to go home. Starting at admission and throughout your stay, we educate you — at your bedside, on your schedule. This helps mothers remember important information and helps them feel more in control.

When it is time for you to go home, we discharge you in the morning. You don’t wait around all day. You can get back to your other children, stop for medications or supplies and even avoid traffic.

Maternity Specialists When and Where You Need Them

Some mothers and babies have medical conditions or need specialized care. We can quickly and conveniently get you the attention you need, on-site.

  • Our birthing centers have specialists on-site 24/7. Obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, pediatric specialists and neonatal respiratory therapists are always available when needed.
  • Many of our doctors’ offices and testing services are in the same building. Throughout your pregnancy, you can conveniently attend several appointments during one visit.

Patient-Centered, Family-Centered Care

Patient comfort is very important to us. We work hard to make sure you and your family are comfortable and together.

  • Almost every recovery room is private. And each overnight room has a couch so your partner can stay.
  • We pay for your partner’s parking on the day of admission and day of discharge.
  • We provide meals for both parents. Your partner doesn’t even have to leave you to get dinner.
  • Our social work program helps patients with needs at home, such as food insecurity, transportation, insurance and mental health.
  • We make sure that expectant parents from all backgrounds feel comfortable and supported. We can arrange an interpreter or wheelchair access for those who need it. We provide sensitive, knowledgeable care to incarcerated mothers, older mothers, teens, same-sex couples, adoptive families and mothers with opiate-use disorders.
