Routine prenatal care can help protect mom and her baby throughout the pregnancy journey. Consistency is key – at each appointment, the doctor tracks the progress of the pregnancy and its impact on the mother’s overall health.
What happens at prenatal care appointments?
The first appointment
- Take height, weight, blood pressure, breathing and pulse measurements
- Conduct breast and pelvic exams
- Get a Pap test (if indicated)
- Test for STIs
- Screen for diabetes, anemia, hepatitis B and rubella
Follow-up appointments
- Update medical history
- Check urine, weight and blood pressure
- Monitor swelling
- Examine the position of the fetus
- Measure belly growth
- Listen to the fetal heartbeat
- Discuss any genetic testing you request
