What happens at prenatal care appointments?

The first appointment
  • Take height, weight, blood pressure, breathing and pulse measurements
  • Conduct breast and pelvic exams
  • Get a Pap test (if indicated)
  • Test for STIs
  • Screen for diabetes, anemia, hepatitis B and rubella
Follow-up appointments
  • Update medical history
  • Check urine, weight and blood pressure
  • Monitor swelling
  • Examine the position of the fetus
  • Measure belly growth
  • Listen to the fetal heartbeat
  • Discuss any genetic testing you request
