Weight Loss Surgery Qualifications

You may qualify for surgery if you:

  • Are extremely obese, with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40
  • Are obese (BMI between 35 and 40) and have a weight-related health issue, like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea or high cholesterol
  • Have had bariatric surgery and are gaining weight
  • Need to undergo medically supervised weight loss to qualify for bariatric surgery

Additional requirements may include:

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Having no current drug or alcohol problems and at least one year of sobriety, if applicable
  • Not actively using tobacco
  • Committing to improving your health and lifestyle
