ECMO
ECMO Excellence at St. Peter’s Health Partners
St. Peter’s Heath Partners offers services like extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which gives our sickest patients the best chances for healing. ECMO is a type of life support machine that provides temporary breathing and circulation support to critically ill patients.
ECMO was initially used for babies and young children. Now it is also an option for adult patients who are no longer stable on ventilators. For example, doctors use ECMO to stabilize some critically ill COVID-19 patients.
ECMO is a Short-Term Treatment for Severe, Life-Threatening Conditions
It is not a treatment that patients plan for, but you can rest easy knowing that we can provide ECMO if needed.
- Specialized technology: ECMO is an advanced form of life support that’s not widely available. St. Peter’s Health Partners is among a small number of hospitals in New York state with ECMO capability.
- Experienced care team: Our team includes multiple providers with specialized training in ECMO, including perfusionists, respiratory therapists, and critical care doctors and nurses. These ECMO specialists support the cardiac critical care unit (CCU) staff in monitoring ECMO patients and safely adjusting the machines.
- Regional expertise: St. Peter's Health Partners is one of the few hospitals in the Capital Region with ECMO machines and in-house specialists. We provide support to nearby hospitals to ensure that other critically ill patients in our community receive the best possible care.
