Integrative Wellness

The Hildegard Medicus Cancer Center is pleased to offer a complement of integrative wellness programs designed to meet the specific needs of individuals diagnosed with cancer. We believe that all individuals diagnosed with cancer should be afforded access to integrative medicine and therapies. The Center provides integrative wellness programs that help patients live healthier, more stress-free lives. These integrative wellness services are offered free of charge thanks to the generous donation of the Karen L. Mosseau Fund and the Nancy B. Clemente Fund.

Thrivers Connection (Free Educational Luncheon Series)

This free luncheon program provides information to help improve the quality of life for those living with cancer. The program features guest speakers who discuss topics selected by patients. It is a collaboration of St. Peter’s, the Nancy B. Clemente Fund and the American Cancer Society. For more information, call the American Cancer Society at 518-220-6960.

Patient-Centered Wellness

The cancer patient navigation program provides support to individuals diagnosed with cancer. Our patient navigator is an oncology-certified nurse who will act as an advocate and serve as a liaison between the patient and the cancer care team. Patient navigation removes barriers and saves lives.

4 My Sisters and My Brothers

Treatment of cancer can cause hair loss, changes in skin texture, and a loss of self-confidence as appearances change. Working collaboratively with 4 My Sisters and My Brothers, we help patients secure proper fitting cranial prosthetics and restore self-confidence through makeup application and skin care techniques.

Whole Patient Care

Our social workers work with patients and their loved ones to help cope with stress related to their cancer diagnosis and treatment. We host monthly support groups that address the needs of the cancer survivor, and run a concurrent support group for their children.

Rehabilitation Support

Our staff provides early referral to lymphedema therapy, and occupational and physical therapy, which can contribute to a better quality of life during and after cancer treatment. Also, we work closely with the Troy YMCA, which offers the LIVESTRONG program for patients diagnosed with cancer.

Healing Touch

Healing touch is a gentle, non-invasive form of energy-balancing work that promotes deep relaxation. Our healing touch program helps patients manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, such as fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, pain and lymphedema. Healing touch can also be used to relax and balance the body before and after surgery.

Nutrition Wellness

Dietitians work closely with patients to provide comprehensive nutritional care. Our dietitians provide support that improves nutritional deficiencies, minimizes complications and side effects of cancer, helps patients maintain muscle mass, and promotes healing.

Come to the Table

Chef James Rhoads and Linda Rhoads offer unique cooking classes that teach patients the benefits of good nutrition and practical cooking skills to live a healthier life. During each class, participants enjoy a cooking demonstration and healthy food tastings.

Yoga Classes

Regular exercise has been shown to stimulate the body’s natural anti-cancer defenses. We offer yoga classes especially designed for patients with cancer, that provide an ideal form of whole-body exercise and can help restore motion and flexibility in a gentle, balanced manner.

Therapeutic Massage

Studies suggest that massage can decrease stress, anxiety, depression, pain and fatigue. Our Center offers massage therapy services for patients diagnosed with cancer which can also help reduce pain and stiffness, increase mobility and rehabilitate injured muscles.
