Support Before and After Cardiac Surgery

Before surgery, we take time to explain the type of procedure you need and how it can help you feel better. We want you to feel comfortable about treatments, which is why we take the time to answer any questions you may have. After surgery, you receive follow-up care in the hospital and our clinic from the same experts you already know and trust.

If you need additional assistance, we’re here for you. Between appointments, you can reach us by phone or electronically using MyChart. On weekdays, our walk-in clinics offer accessible same-day care for non-life-threatening cardiac symptoms. No appointment is necessary.

Conditions Our Heart Surgeons Treat

We use minimally invasive and open heart surgery techniques to treat:

  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease - Some heart abnormalities that are present at birth require surgery later in life. We repair leaky valves and other issues that worsen over time.
  • Aortic Aneurysm and Other Aortic Diseases - This group of conditions affects the main blood vessel that delivers oxygen-rich blood to the body. We repair weak spots that balloon outward (aneurysms) and other conditions to reduce your risk of life-threatening complications.
  • Atrial Fibrillation and Other Arrhythmias - We use implantable devices to control difficult-to-manage arrhythmias. Heart surgeons sometimes implant wires directly into the heart that connect to a device that regulates heart rhythm.
  • Cardiomyopathy - Surgery is often necessary to treat abnormally thick heart tissue due to cardiomyopathy. You have many options, including procedures to remove excess tissue, or implantable devices that support heart functioning.
  • Coronary Artery Disease - We use various techniques to widen narrowed blood vessels and improve blood flow through the heart. Treatment may include a coronary artery bypass graft (heart bypass surgery).
  • Heart Attack - You have access to lifesaving care any time of day, 365 days a year. We use a variety of techniques to quickly restore blood flow to the heart. These include bypass surgery and heart valve surgery.
  • Heart Failure - If your heart can no longer keep up with your body’s needs, you may benefit from a left ventricular assist device. Surgeons implant this device, which takes over the heart’s pumping action.
  • Heart Tumors - Cardiac surgeons work alongside St. Peter’s Health Partners Cancer Care Center experts to plan therapies. Treatment often includes surgery to remove the tumor.
  • Pulmonary Embolism - This condition occurs when a blood clot gets stuck in the lungs. A life-threatening pulmonary embolism often requires surgery to quickly access and remove the clot.
  • STEMI Myocardial Infarction - STEMI is the clinical name for a major heart attack caused by the complete blockage of a coronary artery. To prevent permanent damage to heart muscle, we use a variety of techniques to quickly restore blood flow.
