The Capital Region’s leading back and spine surgery program is at St. Peter’s Health Partners. Our expertise spans common and complex conditions that occur at any point between the top of your spine and tailbone. We deliver appropriate care using sophisticated technologies that lead to a faster recovery and long-lasting relief.

Back and Spine Surgery at St. Peter’s Health Partners: Why Choose Us?

Our team includes experienced surgeons, one of whom completed a distinctive orthopedic spine-neurosurgery fellowship. We consider all possible factors causing your symptoms, including joint, nerve, muscle and bone issues. This approach helps you receive the treatments that are most appropriate for your needs right from the start. Highlights of our program include:

  • Appropriate care: Seeing one of our surgeons doesn’t always mean you’ll end up with surgery. We carefully consider your medical needs and may recommend nonsurgical options first. You may feel better with physical therapy or focused pain management care. If surgery is right for you, we explain how it can help and what to expect.
  • Quality: Our experience from performing a high number of successful spine surgeries is one reason so many people turn to us for care. We deliver precise surgical care, enabling us to treat the region’s most complex cases successfully. Our team also helps people get much-needed relief with revision surgery if a previous procedure was not successful.
  • Quick recovery: We often use minimally invasive spine surgery, which uses smaller incisions for a quicker recovery. Most patients go home the same day. If you need more time, St. Peter’s Hospital and Samaritan Hospital have dedicated recovery units. Nurses and therapists help you stay comfortable and make steady progress toward a safe return home.
  • Smooth transition back to daily activities: Most patients do not need physical therapy after surgery. We explain ahead of time how to slowly get back to your routine. Recommendations typically include no bending or lifting for six weeks. And we keep a careful watch over your recovery with frequent follow-up visits.

Minimally Invasive Back and Spine Surgery

We use minimally invasive spine surgery techniques and meticulous planning to help you have an efficient procedure. These efforts typically result in less disruption to healthy tissue and shorter procedure times with exceptional results. Minimally invasive spine surgery includes:

  • Sophisticated pre-surgery imaging studies with enhanced views of problem areas that help surgeons plan your procedure
  • Smallest incision necessary leading to less post-surgery discomfort
  • Special devices that access the surgical area by gently pushing muscle and tissue out of the way instead of cutting it
  • Real-time 3D imaging and navigation, enabling surgeons to view spinal structures and surgical instruments from any angle for superior accuracy

Back and Spine Procedures

At St. Peter’s Health Partners, you have access to a broad range of procedures, including:

  • Discectomy treats herniated disc pain by removing abnormal disc tissue.
  • Laminectomy and spinal decompression removes a portion of the lamina, a section of bone near the spinal cord.
  • Laminotomy is similar to laminectomy but smaller, removing only a small portion of the lamina.
  • Spinal fusion joins two or more vertebrae together, stopping abnormal movements that cause back pain.
  • Spinal fusion revision surgery corrects unsuccessful bone fusions, recurrent nerve root compression and other causes of persistent pain.
  • Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty use a cement-like substance to fill tiny breaks (fractures) in the vertebrae.
